“I asked Bert to teach me tattooing and he agreed to. In September that year I did my first tattooing. Bert got a couple of winos off the street and gave them 50c each and I put two tattoos on each of them. Within thirty days I was fixed up with an outliner and a red and black shader. Bert only let me do simple tattoos, nothing with detailed shading. I guess I progressed pretty good ’cause in six months I did anything in the shop.” – Bob Shaw explaining his apprenticeship under Bert Grimm, Hardy Marks Publications 1991.
